Fluorite is the mineral form of calcium fluoride and has been mined in Weardale for almost 50 years. Historically, most mining focused on producing mineral specimens for collectors. However, in recent years, newly discovered veins have revealed something extraordinary: intensely bright green fluorite of exceptional gem quality. These discoveries have made it possible to showcase this remarkable British gemstone in fine jewellery for the first time
One of fluorite’s most fascinating characteristics is its daylight fluorescence. Depending on the amount of natural light it receives, the gemstone can subtly shift in colour, displaying beautiful tones of green and purple.
Fluorite is also a relatively soft and delicate gemstone, making it best suited to necklaces and earrings rather than rings that experience daily wear. To preserve its beauty, it should be treated with the same care as an emerald. Avoid contact with perfumes, creams, jewellery cleaners, and sudden changes in temperature.
